Mentee Testimonials

Michelle is my role model of being an effective mentor. She was my supervisor when I started working as an online English tutor at BYU-Hawaii. I remember I was nervous when I started the job, but Michelle gave me the confidence to do my work successfully by giving me proper training and constructive feedback whenever I needed it. She was always ready to listen and help co-workers with a positive and respectful attitude. Michelle is a friendly and cheerful person. At the same time, she is diligent and professional. Just being with her in the same work environment gave me the motivation to be a better tutor. I am one of many people who was blessed with Michelle’s mentoring skills.

Michelle was a skilled mentor while working in the BYUH Distance Learning Program. Primarily, Michelle was a great mentor because she is a talented English language instructor with a strong knowledge of the English language and education pedagogy. Michelle always had well-structured tutoring sessions with her individual students and helped her students to learn and grow within the distance learning program. From there, Michelle became a supervisor to the other tutors in the distance learning program. Michelle helped the students she mentored to grow in a supportive and encouraging manner. She gave weekly training on skillsets she thought would help her tutors grow and step outside their comfort zones. Michelle took the time to know each tutor she mentored on an individual level and developed genuine personal relationships with each of them. Michelle was patient and encouraging while mentoring other tutors and was personally invested in each tutor's success. She was a successful mentor because of her desire to help others grow and her own personal experience teaching English. Michelle is thoughtful, respectful, and genuine when mentoring others and was a great asset in the Distance Learning Program at BYUH.

A couple of things that I learned from Michelle as my supervisor in the Distance Learning Program are the importance of listening and resources in teaching.
Michelle is an excellent listener to her colleagues and her students. During our team meetings, she would listen well to our suggestions on how we can better improve our teaching skills. I also remember a time when I observed one of her online teachings where she listened carefully to her student and was able to provide an effective answer to her question. Because she listened to all of us, the Distance Learning Program was made better.
Another skill that I admire from Michelle is her use of resources in teaching. Some of the resources that I learned from her are Canva and Infographic. She would use these resources to better explain teaching principles in our team meetings and in her online classes. Her use of resources helped in simplifying principles that were difficult to understand.

Intermediate Grammar (Winter 2022)
I learned grammar from Ms. Lung. Studying grammar was a little boring for me, but she taught us in a very easy-to-understand way and always tried to keep us entertained. She helped us stay motivated by always reminding us of our goals in learning English.

ELING 325 (Summer 2022)
I took a grammar class over the summer with Ms. Lung, and it was such a positive experience! There was a lot of material to cover over the few weeks of the term, but Ms. Lung did a phenomenal job of fitting in the content while also going at a pace that adapted to the needs of our class. I always felt that my questions were taken seriously. Ms. Lung is so kind, and I would recommend her to anyone!

ELING 150 (Fall 2022)
The ELING 150 class helped me learn things that I thought were hard but simple and non-stressful. We had the best teacher to balance fun and diligence in our classroom. The environment was safe, and we had all the help we needed when we needed it.

Advanced Writing (Spring 2022)
I consider Ms. Lung one of the most valuable teachers in my life. She loves teaching, and she always has a plan for each lesson. She is able to meet the objectives of the curriculum. Her focus is on helping her students to be better. Even though it was her time off, she took time for us to practice or ask questions. Ms. Lung also shows love and patience with her students struggling with English.
She loves working hard, and she has a high compromise with herself to be better every single day. She is a great example to show how we can learn another language because she knows what learning English is like.

ELING 150 (Fall 2022)
I enjoyed every minute of Ms. Lung's class. She is very patient with students. In my experience as an international student in my freshman year, Ms. Lung has helped me to build confidence in English writing. She taught me to write cover letters for future job opportunities, and prepare my resumé. Now I understand persuasive writing, too. She has found a way to make students have fun in the writing class. I will always remember her because she is disciplined and never loses time in class.

Advanced Grammar (Fall 2022)
I consider Mrs Lung an amazing teacher. She's definitely one of the best teachers I've ever met. She always tried to help me to improve my English, and also to understand it. I'll always remember when I was having a hard time when she inspired me to try my best and set for myself big goals. Even though it was not her responsibility to make me feel better or inspired, she did it and she made sure of my progress to apply for a college.
